by Jeronimo Cuauhtemoc Aguilar, LSPC Policy Analyst

Legal Services for Prisoners with Children is co-sponsoring several bills to advance justice for incarcerated people and their families.

AB 651 (Asm. Bryan) – Access to Justice for Incarcerated Parents
This bill ensures incarcerated parents can attend dependency hearings remotely if they cannot be transported to court.

AB 1279 (Asm. Sharp-Collins) – Pathways to Justice
This bill prevents juvenile adjudications and youth (under 18) charged as adults from enhancing adult felony sentences and allows resentencing petitions for those affected.

The Blue Sky Climate and Emergency Response Act (Asm. Rodriguez)
This proposal establishes protections against extreme climate conditions in prisons, improves oversight, and strengthens emergency response.

AB 248 (Asm. Bryan) – County Jail Wage Max
This bill allows local governments to set living wages for people working in county jails.

SB 423 (Sen. Smallwood-Cuevas) – Incarcerated Firefighters Workforce Development Act
This legislation expands firefighter training, creates post-release hiring pipelines, and strengthens partnerships with CAL FIRE and community colleges.

ACA 6 (Asm. Wilson) – The End Slavery in CA Act
This constitutional amendment removes involuntary servitude language and explicitly prohibits slavery in all forms.

AB 475 (Asm. Wilson) – End Forced Labor and Exploitation of Incarcerated Workers Act
This bill removes the forced labor mandate from PC 2700, establishes voluntary work programs, and prevents disciplinary action for refusing work.

AB 247 (Asm. Bryan) – Incarcerated Firefighters Wages
This bill seeks to raise wages for incarcerated firefighters to a humane and equitable level.

AB 800 (Asm. Ortega) – Vending Machines
This bill regulates food prices in prison visiting rooms, expands vendor contracts, and ensures access to healthier and more affordable options.

These measures promote dignity, justice, and economic fairness for incarcerated individuals and their families.
