Hit the Devil

September 8, 2026 by AOUON Contributor Leave a Comment

by FROG (Forever Reliant On God) & Ghostwrite Mike

Intro | Ghost
We masterin the fine art of self dissection… somatic abolition
First person narrative, poetry, spoken word… this that trauma talk monologue

Verse 1 | FROG
Self-destructive seeds implanted by distractions
Money, power, respect, illogical satisfaction
Generational curses, soiled our DNA
Tribe after tribe we lost our last names
Kings and Queens manifestin they dreams
Equity—risen beyond material things
Grace in the grind, elevatin our minds
Abundantly blessed, livin on God’s time
Solomon’s wisdom empowered our vision
Faith over fear, that’s divine intervention
Educational spears to battle oppressors
College degrees for the critical thinkers
Rising scholars, public speakers
Property owners, community leaders
Love is a verb rooted in God’s grace
Love has the power to rebirth the greats

Chorus | Ghost
Sang a backyard sinner, hands-up spiritual (spiritual)
Hit the devil wit the lyrical
Real talk teachable moments, redemption
Forged in community, human connection (c’mon)
Tattoo every word, turn me up, hold me down, break… (break ‘em)Every chain, every pawn claim a crown, plant seed (pray)
This right here be fertile ground
We are (fo’ real), Free to Dream (free), Rebirth of Sound

Verse 2 | Ghost
Send blessings, to those who neva’ showed me grace
I ain’t deserve it (nah), if I could take yo’ place
And carry every last burden, I’d fo’sholly do it
For the ancestors (preach), I know they put y’all through it (Lord)
Antebellum servitude, born convicted, bodies lifted
Hung from live oak magnolias…
Cocoa-butter my Beloved’s scarred reminders
Wit all my Granny’s wisdom, remove the blinders (talk about it
Repent us, detached placentas… (sinners)
Slidin off the porch, they sent us
To two-piece the devil, this a spiritual battle
Breed the stock like cattle, chattel, b l o o d y chains rattle (look
Deconstruct it wit critical fugitivity
Prison be a Middle Passage, heal these injuries
Echoes of enemigo g u n s like drums, metronomic (aww)
Trauma talk, Ghostwrite symphonic

(Chorus)

Outro | Ghost
Poets write the history books, no derivative
Spoken word misfit spit, so definitive
Primitive scrolls, declarated in cursive
Jim Crow servitude, labor the purpose…

Outro | FROG
They say truth hurts, so they lie to you
Now open up yo eyes, and inspire you
Dreams and thoughts, converted into action
Freedom to choose your own satisfaction…

“Hit The Devil” reflects the lyrics of a song written/recorded within Rebirth of Sound at Valley State Prison in 2026, by FROG & Ghost, who salute Common, Scott Budnick, Calvin Williams, Marcel Woodruff, Sneaks, Syrup & CRM Sherman for the privilege of memorializing their collaborative work of liberatory art celebrating the praxis of somatic abolition.

Policy Update: Manufacturing Poverty

by Nedric Miller, LSPC Senior Policy Fellow For far too long, poverty has carried a price tag in America, and nowhere has that been more painfully obvious than in the legal system, where being poor often means being punished twice: once by the court, and again by the bill that follows.
